"Available Networks" menu item not showing - Windows XP.

After a few years of use, suddenly my wireless quit working.
When I follow Windows instructions and go to Control Panel / Network and Internet connections, Microsoft help instructions say "In
Connect to Wireless Network, under Available Networks, click the wireless network that you want to connect to"
But there is no "available networks" showing.
There used to be! I was using it, the PC hung up, I rebooted and haven't been able to connect since.
I've searched answers here and haven't seen any that specifically say the menu item is not showing up.
Help! Thanks.
:)

Solutions to the Problem "Available Networks" menu item not showing - Windows XP.

If you don't see a list of available networks, your wireless network adapter may be turned off or broken.  Many laptops have a switch that turns off the wireless radio.  This may be a physical switch or a key press combination (e.g., Fn + F2).

Do you have an external wireless adapter or one that's built-in to your computer?

If it's external, what is its make and model?

If it's built-in, what is the make and model of your computer?

Open Device Manager (Start > Run > devmgmt.msc > OK)
Expand the Network Adapter category by clicking the +
What is the name of your wireless adapter (make and model)?
Right-click on the entry for your wireless adapter and select Properties
What is shown under "Device Status"?
What is shown under "Device Usage"?

What version of Windows, including service pack, is installed? Right-click My Computer and select Properties if you don't know.
